Letter books, accounts, shingle records (1795-1843); bankbooks (1837-1853); check stubs (1840-1863); lists of stockholders and contemporary copies of their wills; and other records. Stockholders include David Meade, Richard K. Meade, Thomas Walker, George Washington, the College of William and Mary, and members of many leading Virginia families. The correspondence consists largely of letters to and from the presidents and executive agents, with a few from Thomas Walker. The records include accounts of low profits in the 1780s and in the panic of 1837, labor problems during the early years, trespassers, transportation problems, difficulties in arranging stockholders' meetings, and the subdivision of shares during prosperous years. The company was originally interested in agricultural expolitation (including rice cultivation), but the sale of cypress shingles and staves proved more profitable. The company went under as a result of post-Civil War economic conditions and concurrent decrease in the shingle trade.
